Action effective immediately: Barça appoints Deco as new sporting director

When FC Barcelona clinched their first Champions League title in the 2005/06 season – at least since the competition was called that – Deco was there. The full-time Portuguese international featured in the 2-1 win over Arsenal FC while his then-team-mate Xavi, now Barça coach, sat on the bench.

Under the old new president Joan Laporta, FCB seems to be getting the old squad back together, because now the Catalans have appointed Deco as the new sporting director, which had already become apparent. The Brazilian-born, who donned the club’s jersey between 2004 and 2008, takes over the role immediately.

Learning phase with Alemany

For Mateu Alemany, who has previously held a similar position as director of football, this means – also not really surprisingly – that he will be eliminated on September 2nd, when the current transfer window is closed. FC Barcelona confirmed this in an official club announcement on Wednesday afternoon. Until then, Alemany and Deco will work together, a kind of transition and training phase.

The Blaugrana entrusted their former midfielder, who initially signed for three years as director, with the task of putting together the squad together with coach Xavi and specifying the coaching work. In addition, the 45-year-old is now considered responsible for the sporting philosophy of the world club, where he chairs the entire football area.

The club intends to announce exactly what the new sporting structure of FCB should and will look like in the coming weeks.
