Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina’s fine career continues in Toronto. He who had never passed the first round in Canada qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament on Friday, a level he had already reached once in a Masters 1000 (finalist in Monte-Carlo in 2022, beaten by the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas).
Two back-to-back double faults from McDonald at 4-4 in the first set gave Davidovich-Fokina the chance to break, before clinching the set with an ace in the following game. Quickly ahead of the score in the second set (3-0, double break in the pocket), the Spaniard was able to count on the feverishness of his opponent to win in two sets despite a few drops in speed (6-4, 6- 2).

Less impressive than at the start of the tournament but once again author of a solid match (21 winning strokes for 10 unforced errors), Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina will try on Saturday to qualify for a second Masters 1000 final, against world number 3 Daniil Medvedev or the Australian Alex De Minaur (18th in the world).
