In protest against the war in Gaza, an American soldier set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington on Sunday. The man died as a result of the burns.
“I have no intention of being involved in genocide,” said the American soldier who set himself on fire on Sunday in front of the Israeli embassy in the US capital Washington.
The man did this in protest against the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. He died on Monday night as a result of severe burns, as confirmed by the country’s Ministry of Defense.
When the emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident, members of the American secret service had already managed to put out the fire. The Secret Service protects foreign representatives in the USA and was therefore present at the embassy.
According to emergency services, an adult male was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A US Air Force representative confirmed to AFP that the man was an active member of the Air Force, but gave no further information.
An Israeli embassy spokesman previously said no one else was injured in the incident.
The event was streamed live
According to American media, the man streamed his protest on the Twitch platform.
The man, dressed in camouflage clothing, said he had no intention of taking part in genocide. He then doused himself with lighter fluid and set himself on fire.
Before he fell to the ground, he is said to have shouted “Liberate Palestine.”
The AFP news agency was unable to confirm the authenticity of the video footage. According to the New York Times, the video has been removed from Twitch.
