Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently on everyone’s lips: The role-playing game from Larian Studios can look back on an extremely successful release and is breaking one record after the other. But even in the weeks before the final release, the “anything goes” RPG attracted attention with unusual advertising campaigns. These included a sex scene involving a druid in the form of a bear, which has gone extremely well in terms of viral marketing.
However, the excessive success of the scene surprised even Larian founder Swen Vincke, as he explains in the PCGamer interview. The plan from the start was that the promo material would also be fed with clips showing that it was a “cinematic game”. This is where the druid Halsin comes into play, who, according to Vincke, brings some depth with him. After all, as a druid, he lived among bears for centuries – and they can sometimes be pretty wuschy, as the Larian CEO says.
In this aspect, the choice of the video material shown in advance was a good one, because in the Halsin scene the “light was thrown in a narrow framework” on the entire possibilities within the role-playing game. “Fantasy and romance have always been intertwined and now that we’re able to show things it just becomes even more compelling” – although the clip, which went viral, has now caused mild frustration for Vincke’s 17-year-old son. Eventually he came to the Larian CEO with messages from people who were constantly sending him pictures of bears, which caught Vincke off guard – however, based on the sales figures, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 can be sure that the used promotional material made the right decision.
