Bayern wanted him too: Real Madrid loaned Kepa out

After the bitter diagnosis of a cruciate ligament rupture in first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid was only able to fall back on Andriy Lunin as the only healthy goalkeeper in the squad. On Monday, however, the royals did it again. Kepa Arrizabalaga comes on a year-long loan from Chelsea and is expected to close the gap in goal. Afterwards, according to reports, there should be no purchase option for the 28-year-old. Both clubs did not comment on this in their official communication.

Experience of 53 La Liga games

In Kepa, Los Blancos get a goalkeeper who knows the Spanish league. At his youth club Athletic Bilbao, the goalkeeper blossomed into a regular, completed 53 league games and developed into the player that Chelsea FC spent a total of 80 million euros in summer 2018.

The Spaniard was initially set for the Blues for two years, but lost his regular place to Edouard Mendy in the third year. After two years as number two, Kepa benefited from an injury to Mendy last year and worked his way back to number one even after he was fit again.

Mendy may be gone (Al-Ahli), but the Blues have found a new competitor in Brighton & Hove Albion’s Robert Sanchez. Accordingly, he can have significantly more hopes of playing time in Madrid in the coming months. Last but not least, Kepa needs this with a view to the European Championship in 2024.

No change to Munich

Kepa was also considered a candidate at FC Bayern. There is only Sven Ulreich in the professional squad until Manuel Neuer’s comeback. Thomas Tuchel already coached Kepa at Chelsea, but the Spaniard was the clear number two under the 49-year-old.

Most recently, Tuchel explained what makes the search for a new goalkeeper at FCB so complicated: “We are looking for someone who now has the potential and personality to be number one at Bayern and then, hopefully, when Manu returns in full strength and fitness is able to swallow his pride and is a team player enough to accept Manu as number one.”

His move to Madrid, where he is in a similar situation with Courtois, shows that Kepa could have accepted this role. However, Bayern have to find another solution.
