Blockbusters make the tills ring

“Barbie”, “Oppenheimer” and a lot of rain have brought the German cinema industry a successful summer business so far. “We are very satisfied, because things are going really well for the cinemas at the moment,” said Christine Berg, Chairwoman of the Main Association of German Film Theaters (HDF Kino).

The blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” caused “a great enthusiasm among the audience and a real run on the cinema”. The relatively cool, rainy weather of the past few weeks also played a role – “but this alone is not decisive,” says Berg. “The very good and wide range of films with its major highlights ensures that cinema as a leisure experience in the holiday and vacation months is way ahead.”

38 percent more ticket sales

According to the cinema association, the new “Barbie” film starring Margot Robbie (33) and Ryan Gosling (42) has already attracted 3.7 million viewers to German cinemas. “Oppenheimer” then had around 2.5 million visitors. But other films such as “Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny” or “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” will also find their enthusiastic audience this summer.

“Of course, this summer is a lot better than the last three pandemic summers, but it’s also impressive compared to other comparable years,” said Berg. Since the beginning of the year, the film theaters that belong to the HDF and use 75 percent of German screens have sold more than 56 million tickets – and thus recorded an increase of 38 percent compared to the previous year. Ticket sales were only a few percentage points behind the pre-pandemic year 2019.
