BMW i7 Protection: First bulletproof electric car with VR9 resistance class

The new BMW i7 Protection is the first bulletproof electric vehicle and, thanks to its certification by the Munich Ballistics Office and the subsequent evaluation in the VR9 resistance class, it is also suitable as a special protection vehicle for heads of state, leading politicians, diplomats and prominent people around the world who are looking for a particularly high protection class.

BMW Protection Core with strong armor

Based on the so-called “BMW Protection Core”, a model-specific self-supporting body structure made of armored steel, which is also combined with additional strong armor for the underbody and the roof as well as armored windows, the BMW i7 Protection achieves the second-highest classification in the resistance and bullet resistance classes VR (“Vehicle Resistance”) after class 9.

The VR9 resistance class guarantees that the vehicle’s armor can withstand military projectiles up to 7.62 × 51 mm (“NATO”) and a projectile energy of up to 3,289 joules.

xDrive all-wheel drive and a system output of 544 hp

The new BMW i7 Protection is powered by a drive consisting of one electric motor each on the front and rear axles. This develops a system output of up to 400 kW (544 hp) and a system torque of up to 745 Nm. The BMW i7 Protection accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds, and its top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h.

Thanks to the so-called PAX tires and emergency rings applied to the rims, the BMW i7 Protection xDrive can guarantee continued driving at up to 80 km/h even if there is a complete loss of pressure.

The BMW i7 Protection is produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing and is to be presented to the world public for the first time at the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich. An extradition to people with a particularly high need for protection is scheduled to start in December of this year. It goes without saying that the driver and front passenger as well as the companions in the rear are offered a wide range of apps, telematics, comfort and entertainment. However, BMW has not yet mentioned prices.

The official press release from the Bavarian automobile manufacturer provides even more detailed information, while the YouTube channel “4Drive Time” provides corresponding impressions of the BMW i7 Protection.
