Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III open combat mission details

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III campaign will be supplemented with open combat missions, the first details of which have been revealed.

David Swenson, Campaign Creative Director for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, reveals more information about the new game following the reveal of the latest installment. Modern Warfare III will be the first direct sequel to the previous game, allowing players to continue the story without having to wait years.

As a first teaser already indicated days ago, in the sequel to Modern Warfare II, Captain Price and Task Force 141 will face Vladimir Makarov as the ultimate threat. With the ultranationalist’s increasing global influence, the task force faces an uphill battle.

Sledgehammer Games is now officially confirmed as the leading development studio. Swenson sees a huge opportunity in the fact that Modern Warfare III is a direct sequel to the game from the year before.

“Imagine we drop the Modern Warfare II post-credits scene and then have to wait three years to get more details. This is a huge opportunity. I don’t have to spend a lot of time reminding the audience what they were playing and getting them interested in those characters again because they were interested in those characters in the last game and the live Seasons after launch, the story has continued. We can jump right in and pick up right where we left off,” Swenson said.

But not only Sledgehammer is working on Modern Warfare III. The creative director for the game’s campaign also lost a few words about the cooperation with the other Call of Duty Studios, such as Infinity Ward.

Svenson said of working with other studios, “We’re all developers, but we’re also Call of Duty fans and we care deeply about the characters. We study everything about the game. There are so many characters, relationships, factions, and locations in MW canon, and they’re super important to the story. Each studio has a great storytelling team and for Modern Warfare III we are working in partnership with Infinity Ward to create a campaign that I hope everyone will love.”

With the “Open Combat Mission” Svenson also presented a “major innovation for campaigns” in Call of Duty. It promises players an “incredible level of choice and opportunity.”

The developer officially describes the innovation as follows:

“Open Combat Missions (OCMs) are an exciting addition to the Call of Duty campaign. Not only do they complement the cinematic missions you’re used to, they also give you numerous additional choices in your mission methods. For example, if you prefer stealth methods, you can perform an OCM mission using night vision goggles and silenced weapons and complete your objectives without your enemies knowing you were even there. However, if loud explosions and reckless abandon are part of your repertoire, you should strap on extra armor plates to your torso and hit the targets head-on!”

According to Svenson, these open combat missions were also added to give players a choice in approaching an objective that fits their playstyle.

But it’s not going to be like arming yourself to the teeth for a stealth mission. In fact, if you play a mission stealth, you’re just being handed a knife. For a major attack, on the other hand, you can steer into a vehicle and let it rip. As the developer notes, it may take several tries before finding a satisfactory tactic.

But you shouldn’t think of them as side missions. For Svenson, they are a further development of the campaign. He said: “It’s an evolution of the Call of Duty campaigns and an evolution of how players experience them. These aren’t side missions, but campaign missions that are seamlessly woven into the story and offer you more options than ever before. If you want to sneak your way through the entire level, you can. There are also vehicles, cleverly hidden loot crates, and weapon crates in these open combat missions, some of which contain killstreaks that we call Armaments since you don’t have to streak kills to get them to earn.”

Not only in multiplayer, but also in the campaign, if you’re looking for it, you can find killstreaks to call in air support, for example.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will be released on November 10, 2023. Be sure to check back here to learn more about the different editions that are already available for pre-order.
