Casper Ruud takes revenge on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the ATP 500 final in Barcelona

Casper Ruud quickly learned the lessons from his failure in the final of the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo last weekend against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Impressive by the skin of his teeth, physically fresher than his rival, the Norwegian dominated the Greek on Sunday in the final of the ATP 500 in Barcelona (7-5, 6-3, in 1h29).

The sixth-ranked player in the world, who has already received ten shots in the ATP 250 class but has been burdened with an incredible 0 out of 7 at the higher level so far, won the best title of his career. After Facundo Diaz Acosta (in Buenos Aires), Taylor Fritz (in Delray Beach) and Karen Khachanov (in Doha), he is also the fourth player of the year to win a tournament without losing a set.

Casper Ruud is the player who won the most games in 2024 (29 after Barcelona). He is also the one who has played in the most finals (4) this season.

The final met the two players who had won the most games on clay since the start of the 2020 season (102 for Ruud, 78 for Tsitsipas). But things started very badly for Ruud, who had a disastrous first game (one double fault, three unforced errors). Break in the pocket, Tsitsipas led his boat to 3-1. But in return, he edited his serve game, notably missing a ready smash.

From then on, the Norwegian gradually gained the upper hand and showed himself to be more precise and powerful, especially on the forehand. The Greek felt thrown back and forth from the baseline and stormed into the net with a score of 5:6. But he suffered three devastating overtakes. With the score at 7:5 after 51 minutes, Ruud had done the difficult part.

Tsitsipas cannot make it in Barcelona

After winning 25 games this season, after winning the first set without dropping a single set, he felt confident. Especially since Tsitsipas showed clear signs of fatigue. The legs stopped following. Two big forehand errors gave his opponent a break in the fourth game of the second set (3:1 Ruud).

The Greek miraculously saved two double-break balls, but the Norwegian finished his final like a boss with a shutout. After 2018, 2021 and 2023, it is Tsitsipas’ fourth defeat in the Barcelona final. And his eleventh final defeat at the ATP 500.

It has been 36 years since a Scandinavian player won in Barcelona. The last one was the Swede Kent Carlson in 1988.
