Klopp's incentive and a missing piece of the puzzle: Liverpool in the check

How did the transfer window go?

After the early commitments of Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton) and Dominik Szoboszlai (Leipzig), things have been idle for a few weeks now, at least as far as newcomers are concerned. The Reds followed up on their plan to rejuvenate the squad and especially the midfield and parted ways with a number of deserving players. James Milner moved to Brighton on a free transfer, Naby Keita to Bremen. Roberto Firmino joined Al-Ahli after the end of his contract and meets Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq) and Fabinho (Al-Ittihad) in Saudi Arabia. The duo flushed the LFC about 60 million euros into the coffers.

These are now to be reinvested, and Romeo Lavia from Southampton FC, which has been relegated to the Premier League, is still high on the list. According to media reports, three offers from the Reds for the defensive midfielder have been rejected so far, with the Saints demanding more than 50 million euros. In the meantime, however, Liverpool have had competition from Chelsea FC in their courtship for the Belgian.

The offensive is meanwhile strong, in the center of defense and on the right defensive side the depth of the squad is still manageable. So it’s quite possible that something will happen in these positions as well.

What is hope and what is worry?

Jürgen Klopp’s good mood is back, the German is “hot” for the new season. Shortly before the start of the Premier League, there is a spirit of optimism around Anfield Road, the disappointing previous season is over. Missing out on the Champions League still hurts a lot, but it’s an incentive for Klopp. “Sometimes you need a setback to realize: ‘Ah, that’s the problem,’ said the 56-year-old after the successful dress rehearsal against Bundesliga club Darmstadt 98 (4-2).

In Liverpool, Klopp (contract until 2026) still enjoys full support, the 56-year-old should bring about and enforce the necessary change. Klopp needs fresh staff for this, and new sports director Jörg Schmadtke is in demand. Other possible newcomers missed the important preparation and therefore have to learn Klopp’s football during the season – not optimal. “The pre-season never ends after the first Premier League game. It lasts until the first international break,” says Klopp, taking a little wind out of his sails on this topic.

Nobody on Merseyside should assume the title this year. For your own claims, a finish in the top four is now mandatory. In view of the strong competition, nothing more can be expected from the younger team for the time being. It is also exciting how seriously Klopp takes the Europa League. As is well known, cup competitions are not at the top of the list for Germans, at the same time winning the title would guarantee a place in the Champions League.

A big challenge awaits the Reds on the first day of the game. On Sunday (5.30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) Liverpool are guests at Chelsea. A duel between two teams in upheaval.
