Kuntz confirms thoughts: Another move to Turkey for Demirbay?

As the Turkish national coach Stefan Kuntz confirmed to the “Ajansspor” portal, the Turkish association is dealing with a change of association for the former German national player Kerem Demirbay. The 30-year-old, who was only transferred from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to Galatasaray Istanbul at the beginning of August, could make the second change in a very short space of time and play for the Turkish national team in the future.

It remains questionable to what extent the Turkish association could benefit from the rule change by FIFA, which is intended to make it easier to change associations. “We’ll definitely look into this. There are a few formalities that need to be checked. On the other hand, of course he has to be better than the players we have,” said Kuntz.

Demirbay, born in the Ruhr area, went through several Turkish youth selections. Despite the efforts of the Turkish association, the son of Turkish parents opted for a future in DFB dress – also due to the fact that the midfield strategist did not have a Turkish passport and was only allowed to appear in test matches for Turkey. Demirbay made his debut for the German selection in 2017 at the age of 23. He completed two senior internationals and won the 2017 Confederations Cup.

No disappointment at Kuntz despite Flick’s appointment

Kuntz not only commented on a possible change of association by Demirbay, but also on the appointment of Hansi Flick as national coach in 2021. The 60-year-old was considered a serious candidate to succeed Joachim Löw at the time because he had won the U-21 European Championship twice . But Kuntz doesn’t feel frustrated that things turned out differently: “When two people are in the race and the decision is made for the other, that’s not disappointing. It’s almost like a sporting competition. If you think you’re doing your best give, but lose, you must accept it.”

On the contrary, the 1996 European champion was happy about the task that awaited him at the Turkish association: “After the years with the U21s, I wanted a new challenge. Working as a foreign coach in a foreign country was a double challenge. I have Listened to my feelings and after very good negotiations I was sure that this step was the right one.”

When asked about a possible future as German national coach, the Turkish national coach dodged. Looking ahead to the upcoming European Championships at home is more important to him: “I believe that we will take part in EURO 2024 in Germany with the Turkish national team.” At least until then, Kuntz will be watching German football from afar.
