The letter begins directly with the death: “My darling, we were living in Baghlan as we knew it when one day the Taliban attacked our house. They killed your uncle and tried to kill your grandfather. We fled to Kabul, but your grandfather couldn’t escape those barbaric fighters there either. They killed him and then threatened to kill your father too. We had no choice but to flee our homeland.”
