Liverpool have suffered a real setback in the title hunt – the misses were costly as Crystal Palace won the full pot at Anfield

English Premier League club Liverpool’s title hopes suffered a major blow as Crystal Palace secured a 1-0 win at Anfield.

The defeat was Liverpool’s first league defeat at Anfield in 28 games. The last time the red shirts lost a Premier League game in their hometown was in October 2022.

Visitors Palace took the lead in the 14th minute when Tyrick Mitchell fed Eberechi Eze, who had an easy task to score the game-winning goal.

Moments later, Palace almost extended their lead when Jean-Philippe Mateta ran through and lofted the ball past goalkeeper Allison. This time defender Andy Robertson managed to clear the ball on the goal line.

In the other direction there was a bombing raid on Liverpool, but without success. Wataru Endo hit the crossbar, Diogo Jota and Luiz Diaz missed big chances and Curtis Jones converted a free kick. In the final minutes, Mohammed Salah also had a great chance, which was saved by the Palace defense.

In terms of scoring chances statistics, Liverpool were overwhelming with 21:8.

It was Liverpool’s second consecutive defeat this week as they lost 3-0 to Italy’s Atalanta in the Europa League play-offs.

Hot battle at the top

The Reds from Merseyside are clearly losing in the title fight. With six rounds to go they are two points behind Manchester City.

Arsenal, level on points with Liverpool, still have a game in hand and could go top of the table later on Saturday if they beat Aston Villa.

Aston Villa is fourth in the table.
