New Metro game? Developer 4A Games at Gamescom

The developer studio behind the Metro series, 4A Games, will be exhibiting at this year’s Gamescom in Hall 3.2, Stand D051/C050, the show’s official website has now confirmed. Since Metro Exodus, the developers have not presented a new project in more detail, but there was a report at the beginning of the year that the successor is said to be fully playable and could be presented this year with Release 2024.

Back in 2020, according to a new report from Insider Gaming, the studio announced via its website that the game is in development: “It’s no secret that we’ve already started work on the next Metro game. With everything, what we’ve learned over the past 15 years, we’ve set our sights even higher – the next title will be developed for Gen 9 consoles and PC, with a complete overhaul of our engine and renderer to accommodate the new performance, storage space and… hardware-assisted ray tracing that the new consoles offer.”

New Metro: Presentation at Gamescom conceivable

While there were reports of a purely multiplayer title, the developers also promised at the time that they would “deliver a great, story-driven single-player experience that the Metro series is based on. As a studio, we want to constantly strive to create bigger and to make better games, but we also listen to what the fans say and we know what’s important to you, we take our responsibility to the franchise seriously and we think you’ll be excited about our plans for the next chapter will be.”

Insider Gaming’s new report claims to have learned that external playtests for the game have been ongoing throughout the year, suggesting the game is nearing completion. While it remains to be seen whether or not the game will be unveiled at the event (which of course seems natural given the presence of 4A Games), the presentation could take place as part of the Gamesom Opening Night Live opening ceremony on August 22nd.
