New trouble for Eto'o: Investigations against Cameroon's association president

Cameroonian soccer star Samuel Eto’o’s tenure as president of his home country is not going to settle down. Eto’o, who was only elected federation president at the end of 2021, is accused of “behaving inappropriately”. The African association does not go into further details in its press release. However, the allegations are said to be serious.

It is the next setback for Cameroonian football, which has repeatedly drawn negative headlines for the past year. Following the retirement of André Onana from the national team at the age of 26 – recently joined Manchester United for €50m – and the suspension of 21 out of 30 players nominated for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for failing age tests this is the next terrible news.

Not Eto’o’s first scandal of his tenure

But even Eto’o personally did not show himself to be a clean sheet. The former FC Barcelona and Inter Milan player drew negative attention to himself at the World Cup in Qatar 2022 when Eto’o attacked a YouTuber. He was also sentenced to 22 months probation for tax evasion last year.

It is not yet known how the investigation will continue. While Eto’o’s lawyer announced on social media that his client feels denounced and reserves the right to take legal action, the CAF now wants to examine the allegations against the 42-year-old. According to the AP news agency, the focus of the investigation should also be his role as ambassador for a sports betting company. At least one club was reported to have complained to the Cameroonian FA about a violation of the institution’s code of conduct as a result of the deal.
