Many are wondering why Nintendo is showing such disinterest in Donkey Kong, which hasn’t had a new adventure since the release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Wii U about ten years ago.
Now it appears they have at least considered the matter. After Activision Blizzard incorporated Nintendo characters into Skylanders Superchargers, Nintendo was so impressed that they teamed up with Vicarious Visions to launch a new Donkey Kong game that seemed to focus on mobility with a donkey gliding on vines could.
At least that’s what gaming historian Liam Robertson claims in the latest episode of DidYouKnowGaming. Shigeru Miyamoto was also reportedly involved in the project, but it was canceled after six months because Activision Blizzard wanted her to be a support developer for Call of Duty instead.
This prompted Vicarious Vision’s founding duo, Karthik and Guha Bala, to exit and instead found Velan Studios, which continued its partnership with Nintendo and released Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit in 2020.
