One thing was clear before the Rocket League World Championship finals kicked off: eSports history is about to be made. No organization had yet won two World Championship titles. Both Team BDS as the defending champions and Team Vitality, which won the trophy in 2019 under the name Renault Vitality, had the opportunity to do so.
Team Vitality knew exactly how to beat Team BDS. It was just four weeks ago that they defeated the reigning world champion in the final of the Spring Split Major. However, it did not seem unlikely that things would turn out differently this time, as Team BDS had gained a lot of self-confidence. The Swiss organization came through the “group phase” flawlessly and also achieved sovereign successes in the play-offs. Among other things, a 4:1 in the new edition of last year’s final against G2 Esports.
Knockout after game three
It came as a bit of a surprise that Team BDS didn’t find their usual form. The third game started without a goal of their own, and there was renewed tension. It was 3:3 after regular time – so it finally went into extra time, which is decided by a golden goal in Rocket League. However, this didn’t last long, after almost 40 seconds Alexis ‘zen’ Bernier, who was subsequently voted MVP of the tournament, made the decision.
A neck punch that left a mark on the opponent. In the last game of the evening, the French organization then led 2-0 early on, after that they didn’t give up and thus crowned themselves world champions for the second time in the PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf to the cheers of their fans. The Golden Hornets, as their fan community calls themselves, provided loud support. “Thank you for the atmosphere here, it’s incredible,” said Andrea ‘Radosin’ Radovanovic in an interview with the organizers after the semi-final triumph.
