Ryzen 7 7840S and Ryzen 5 7640S: AMD’s economical APUs in the FP8 package are reserved exclusively for Lenovo

Ryzen 7 7840S and Ryzen 5 7640S: AMD's economical APUs in the FP8 package are reserved exclusively for Lenovo

AMD’s frugal Zen 4 APUs from the Ryzen 7000 (“Phoenix”) series are exclusively reserved for the thin Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 ultrabook as S models in the larger FP8 package. However, the AMD Ryzen 7 7840S and the Ryzen 5 7640S only have minor differences to the already known U models.

Ryzen 7 7840S and Ryzen 5 7640S are custom APUs

The AMD Ryzen 7 7840S and the Ryzen 5 7640S will be used exclusively by Lenovo as “custom silicon” for the time being, but have not yet been officially presented by AMD. However, it can be assumed that the cTDP was again slightly reduced. Lenovo repeatedly has exclusive custom chips issued by AMD, such as most recently the AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 6860Z for the professional ThinkPad Z, which is aimed at content creators.

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 can already be configured on Lenovo’s Dutch website.

FP8 package accommodates fast interface

So far it is only known that the S models rely on the larger FP8 package, while the well-known U models use the smaller FP7 package. Thanks to the expansive package, a Camera Serial Interface 2 (“MIPI CSI-2”), a particularly fast interface for communicating with a webcam, can also be integrated into the custom APU. The hardware reviewer “Golden Pig Upgrade” has already published comparison images of the two packages on Bilibili.

Furthermore, it is likely to be a variant of the Ryzen 7000U that has been particularly optimized for high efficiency, which will only be used as a custom APU in particularly light and thin notebooks, including the new Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 and the upcoming Lenovo Yoga Air 14S, for example use comes.

“The Yoga series laptop is powered by a custom-made Ryzen 7 7840S processor, which is an FP8 packaged version of the regular Ryzen 7 7840U processor. The Ryzen 7 7840S processor is a high-performance processor that is designed for thin and light laptops .”

Lenovo

Functionally and in terms of the clock frequencies, the Ryzen 7 7840S and the Ryzen 5 7640S seem to be identical to the already known Ryzen 7 7840U and Ryzen 5 7640U. However, it’s possible that AMD will give its exclusive partner Lenovo a slightly wider range of cTDP, which would be advantageous for Ultrabooks.
