Simeone (20) was tackled from behind by his opponent José Matos during a friendly for his club Deportivo Alaves at second-tier Burgos CF (1-2). According to “El Correo”, the son of coach Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid) suffered a serious injury to his shin and fibula and had to pause for several months. First division club Alaves has not yet announced an official diagnosis. However, the newspaper and regional media refer to the Basque club from the capital Vitoria.
The severity of the injury can be seen immediately on videos. An ambulance pulled onto the pitch to take the forward to the hospital. Matos was sent off and later apologized on Instagram: “I’m really sorry Giuliano.”
Sixth rise in club history
Alaves starts the new season at FC Cadiz on August 14th. Last season, the blue and whites finished fourth in Spain’s second division and made it through the play-offs in dramatic fashion to the top flight. It was the Basques’ sixth promotion to the first division.
Giuliano Simeone is one of three sons of “Cholo” Simeone (53), who are also professional footballers. Giovanni (28) is in the service of the Italian champions SSC Napoli, Gianluca (25) plays in the lower league for CD Tudelano in Spain. Giuliano joined Vitoria from Atletico Madrid this summer. All three brothers are at home up front, unlike their father who once played in midfield.
