Marvel’s Thor run has been a collection of works of varying caliber and content to say the least, not least when it comes to its antagonists. Hela in the acclaimed Ragnarok was probably by far the best so far, even if Loki wasn’t as playful as the villain in the absolute first of the Thor films. But then we also have the blockbuster The Dark World, not to mention Bale as The God Butcher in Love and Thunder, a truly wasted character who had all the potential to be the nastiest yet.
So perhaps it is unsurprising then that Waititi (who directed the last two films in the series) is now hoping for a real nastiness in the inevitable fifth Thor film. In an interview with ScreenRant, he shared his thoughts, saying:
“It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome .”
“I don’t think we can have a villain that’s weaker than Hela. I feel like we need to step up from there and add a villain that’s somehow more formidable.”
We also already know that Hemsworth himself is happy to continue in the role and has expressed his great appreciation for the experience of shooting all four films so far. Although they also differed markedly. Specifically, Hemsworth has appreciated how the character has grown and changed over time, which has been the driving force for him to return time and time again.
“I love the fact that I’ve been able to do something fairly different throughout the process. Thor 1 and 2 were their own thing, Thor 3 and 4 were a very different feel… and then even Avengers, the Lebowski Thor, the Infinity War Thor, due to different directors and I think mostly my own need to do something different. You know, I got sick of the character pretty quickly every couple of years.”
