Entrepreneur and star chef Johann Lafer has written a book about the topic of nutrition against pain. It was created in collaboration with nutritionist Petra Bracht and her husband, pain specialist Roland Liebscher-Bracht. The cookbook “Eating against pain – the cookbook” lists the top ten foods against pain, among other things. The following foods are said to act as natural pain relievers:

  • chili peppers: The alkaloid caspaicin, which occurs naturally in various types of peppers, can reduce pain impulses sent to the brain.
  • olive oil contains a painkiller-like substance. This slows down the enzymes that are responsible for causing pain.
  • raspberries: The plant pigment it contains reduces pain and neutralizes free radicals that can cause inflammation.
  • pomegranate: The seeds contain the anti-inflammatory agent punicalagin.
  • Lamb’s lettuce: Lamb’s lettuce is known for being particularly high in vitamin C. This strengthens the immune system and is necessary for the development of connective tissue and bones.
  • radicchio provides vitamins from the B group, vitamin C and vitamin A. In terms of minerals, it mainly contains calcium and potassium.
  • arugula belongs to the cruciferous family. It contains so-called glucosinolates. During the digestive process, these are transformed into anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer substances.
  • lenses It contains antioxidants, vitamins B1, B6 and vitamin E as well as the minerals magnesium, copper and selenium – they all have an anti-inflammatory effect and support the body’s own defences.
  • Kale: Like savoy cabbage, broccoli, rose sprouts or cauliflower, it also belongs to the cruciferous family and contains so-called glucosinolates, which stop inflammatory reactions.
