In May, the social media group Meta, which operates Facebook and Instagram, among other things, announced that it would no longer allow content from the Wagner mercenary group on its pages and accordingly also want to delete. But there is still a lot of Wagner content on the platforms, as the US broadcaster CNN reports.
According to this, experts from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London discovered a large network on Facebook and Instagram that advertises the mercenary squad among hundreds of thousands of followers. According to the study, over 110 pro-Wagner accounts were discovered active on the platforms in more than a dozen languages. In the posts they distribute, they call for recruitment, there are images that glorify violence, or they simply praise the Wagner Group.
However, it is unclear whether these accounts officially speak for the group, although many have pretended to be the organization itself. But even if they didn’t belong to Wagner, they were breaking the rules of Meta, according to the experts.
Researchers also noticed while conducting the study that Meta’s algorithms resulted in them being offered Wagner content themselves. According to CNN, Meta said it will review the accounts in question and that the company “regularly removes content when we identify those with clear ties to the organization.”
