“This system should be run by people who know exactly what war means and why cynicism and corruption in wartime mean treason,” said the head of state in a video speech on Friday. The decision was made after a review of all offices. A total of 112 criminal proceedings have already been initiated against employees of military replacement offices.

The case of the already dismissed head of the military service in the Black Sea region of Odessa had previously attracted particular attention. He is said to have accepted bribes and earned the equivalent of several million euros since the beginning of the war. For documents about unfitness for military service and provisions, for example, the prices paid are said to be several thousand euros.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian war of aggression for more than 17 months. After the Russian invasion, Kiev ordered a general mobilization. With a few exceptions, men of military age between 18 and 60 are now subject to an exit ban. Extending the ban to 16 and 17 year olds is being discussed in Parliament. So far, however, only reservists over the age of 28 have been drafted.
