What is Conicet, what it does and how many people work in the organism

The National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), an autarchic entity that depends on the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Nation, is the main agency dedicated to Science and Technology in Argentina.

Its mission is the promotion and execution of scientific and technological activities throughout the national territory and in the different areas of knowledge. It was created by Decree Law No. 1291 on February 5, 1958, its first president was Bernard A. Houssay -Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1947-, who directed the entity for more than a decade.

Instituted as Autarchic organism under the dependence of the Presidency of the Nation, it is dedicated to Provide tools for scientific knowledge ranging from Careers of the Scientific and Technological Researcher and the Research Support Staff, the granting of Scholarships for doctoral and postdoctoral studies, the financing of projects and research Executing Units and until the establishment of Links with international organizations governmental and non-governmental of similar characteristics.

Currently, more than 11,800 researchers, more than 11,800 fellows of doctorate and postdoctorate, more than 2,900 technicians and professionals research support and approximately 1,500 administrative staff. In total, they add up to 28,000 people.

They work distributed throughout the country -from Antarctica to the Puna and from the Andes Mountains to the Argentine Sea- in its 16 Scientific and Technological Centers (CCT), 10 Research and Transfer Centers (CIT), a Multidisciplinary Research Center and more than 300 Institutes and Centers exclusive to Conicet and double and triple dependence with national universities and other institutions.

-Fellows: are graduates of the university who wish to continue studying. His next goal will be the doctorate to generate greater knowledge transfer and improve the quality of his research. At the end of their doctorate, fellows can enter the Scientific Research Career of Conicet and work in Institutes.

-Researchers: the members of the Scientific and Technological Research Career (CIC) have university education and are dedicated to Exclusive form to research Original and creative. In addition, they teach future researchers.

-Professionals and technicians: the members of the Support Staff Career (CPA) provide and carry out technical advice to research groups and collaborate with the implementation of research and development programs. They work under the supervision of Conicet researchers

-Administrative staff: is dedicated to the tasks of conducting, coordinating and providing administrative support to science and technology activities at all levels; such as managers, directors and coordinators, heads of department, professionals and experts in management, administrative and general services issues.

The activity of Conicet is developed in four major areas of knowledge:

-Agricultural, Engineering and Materials Sciences

-Biological and Health Sciences

-Exact and Natural Sciences

-Social Sciences and Humanities

It also has a transversal dependence of Technology that comprises any of the mentioned disciplines applied to Technological and Social Development and Complex Projects.

After 65 years of existence, Conicet is one of the National Nuclei in scientific and technological matters:

-It integrates researchers from all disciplinary areas, who develop their tasks mainly in National Universities, in science and technology research organizations and in their own Executing Units or in association with other institutions.

-Promotes scientific and technological research and development throughout the country.

-It has a Evaluation system updated according to our own and international experience. This participatory and rigorous evaluation system, contemptthe and weighs the quality of the research projects submitted, the productivity derived from them, as well as the trajectory of individuals and research groups.

-It represents a source of information and advice both for the different levels of the National State and for private activity.

Among its objectives are:

-Promote and finance scientific and technological research and support activities aimed at scientific and technological progress.

-The exchange and scientific-technological cooperation, granting subsidies to research projects and internships and scholarships for conducting research.

-Organize and finance institutes, laboratories and research centers.

-Provide advice to public and private entities within the scope of its competence.
