The departure is not a surprise, Micky van de Ven’s performances last season were too strong and the desires aroused by the competition were too great. In the end, Tottenham Hotspur was awarded the contract, which will probably put around 50 million euros on the table for the defender, who is still tied to Wolfsburg until June 30, 2027, including bonus payments. In London, the 1.93 meter tall left foot will receive a working paper until summer 2029.
“It was two nice, intensive years and a successful cooperation on all levels. Micky always showed full commitment for VfL Wolfsburg, worked hard and made an outstanding development,” commented VfL Managing Director Marcel Schäfer on the transfer in a club statement.
In the summer of 2021, van de Ven moved from FC Volendam to Lower Saxony. VfL had to transfer just 3.5 million euros to the Netherlands. In his first season, van de Ven made five appearances in the Bundesliga, and his big breakthrough came last season. Van de Ven was an integral part of Wolfsburg’s defence, only a yellow card suspension on matchday 30 prevented the “perfect” season. The Dutchman went the full distance in all 33 Bundesliga appearances (football grade point average 3.30, one goal, two assists). With a top speed of 35.97 km/h, he was the fastest central defender in the league and the eleventh fastest player overall.
Wolfsburg foresight
Wolfsburg showed foresight and early March extended the contract with van de Ven until 2027, the salary of the shooting star was increased significantly and adjusted to his standing in the squad. According to kicker information, the working paper did not have an exit clause.
“For me, two fantastic years at a wonderful club are coming to an end. In Wolfsburg I was able to develop further as a person and as a footballer and take the next step in my career. I will always look back with great pleasure on what we experienced together and achieved and I will miss my teammates, the staff, the management and all employees very much,” said van de Ven.
At the Spurs, van de Ven will have to acclimatize quickly in order to achieve one of his goals: the EM 2024 in Germany. Having already made the provisional squad for the Winter World Cup in Qatar, the defender would like to be included in the final Oranje squad next summer. But above all, van de Ven needs playing time for this.
